APRIL
PILOT-MillionsOn April 15, the Town Council voted to issue $5.125 million in bonds to fund the construction of two multipurpose turf fields on the hilltop behind the Verona Community Center. (See: Council OKs Bond For New Fields.) Town Manager Joe Martin had told the Council that the bond debt would be financed by special tax levies that could bring Verona more than $1 million a year in revenue, but MyVeronaNJ.com learned that the so-called PILOT taxes won’t generate that much money until 2029. And despite promises by Martin, the year ended without an approved construction plan for the site. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Annin Flagmakers announced it would stop making flags in Verona after nearly 100 years of operation here.
