Seven months after his arrest on charges of sexual assault on a minor, Matthew Swajkowski still has not entered a plea in the case. There was a hearing on Tuesday morning in the case, but it ended with another hearing scheduled for May 7 and a requirement that Swajkowski complete a sex offender assessment before then.

The so-called Avenel assessment is typically administered to people in New Jersey who have committed aggravated sexual assault or sexual assault. It is used to determine whether a sex offender would benefit from certain kinds of therapy while in jail.

According to the original ECPO statement on Swajkowski’s arrest, the 12 charges against him included sexual conduct with a minor and purposely or knowingly offering or serving or making available an alcoholic beverage to a person under the legal age for consuming alcoholic beverages. The former Verona High School teacher could face a sentence of up to eight years and the loss of his teaching license.

Swajkowski’s appearances at the Essex County Courthouse in Newark have been delayed multiple times without explanation. The ECPO arrested Swajkowski last September at his then home in Verona after an investigation by the Verona Police Department.

Defendants in any matter reported on in MyVeronaNJ are presumed innocent until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
