Mr. William John Henning, 89, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2024 at his home in West Orange, surrounded by his loving family.

A reception of family and friends will be held in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Sunday, April 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. with a service of remembrance at 3:30 p.m.

Born and raised in Newark, Mr. Henning was a longtime resident of Verona, and last resided in West Orange while spending winters in Delray Beach. He graduated from Central High School in Newark with the Class of 1951 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in 1964.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and I n the Army Reserves until 1961.

Mr. Henning worked for 35 years as an accounting manager and then comptroller for AT&T, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed meeting with his group of retired friends monthly.

His favorite pastimes were woodworking, gadgets of all kinds, travel, trains, bikes, fishing and time with family.

Mr. Henning was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Henning; parents, William Henry and Henrietta (nee Roos) Henning; brother, Neil Henning and sister, Peggy Longgood.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marjorie Jean (nee Cheetham) Henning; loving children, Bill Henning (Brenda) and Dianne Lavelle (Thomas); cherished grandchildren, TJ Lavelle (Erika) and Kathleen Lavelle (Kevin) and great-grandson, Taylor Lavelle; and sister-in-law, Gail Henning, and many nieces and nephews and friends.
