The last week of summer vacation for Verona students saw some heroics for a lost bird at the Verona Pool, and more. Catch up on the stories you might have missed:

This week, MyVeronaNJ.com ran a story explaining why the Verona and Caldwell football teams will be wearing purple and teal decals on their helmets when they meet for their season-opening game on September 7. The colors are the colors of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. September is suicide awareness month and the teams are using their opening game to bring attention to what is now the third leading cause of death for young people in New Jersey. Athletic personnel from both schools told us why the cause is important to them, and you can read our story here.

New Jersey Monthly‘s list of the top public high schools in the state was published last week, and Verona High School jumped to 24 from from 94th place two years ago. The key to Verona’s strong placement–higher than many of its peers–may lie in a curriculum change that Verona instituted in 2011.

When homing pigeons fly from their coops, they are supposed to return home. But one landed instead at the Verona Pool, leaving the lifeguards and pool staff to figure out where her home should really be. They did, and the bird’s owner was very grateful. But he had a theory about how the bird came to be lost.

What else happened in the week of August 27? A center offering an alternative treatment for depression opened in Verona, the VHS Alumni Association needs help planning its next Hall of Fame Dinner, there will be another flower-arranging fundraiser for Morgan’s Farm, a Verona resident will direct a show to benefit the 9/11 Fund, and Verona’s public schools reminded everyone that they open for the 2018-2019 school year on September 5.
