In the end, they surprised everyone, including perhaps themselves. The Verona High School girls soccer team, which entered the North Jersey Section 1, Group 1 playoffs as the number 9 seed, has knocked off Midland Park to take it all.

The girls had marched with complete determination through the playoffs, picking off team after team ahead of them on the brackets: New Milford, Pompton Lakes and Cresskill–all on their opponents’ home turf–before turning their talents on the Bergen County team on Thursday afternoon.

Colleen Farrell, who has been a factor in so many wins for the girls team this season (she score the go-ahead goal in the Essex County Tournament in October), came through once again. The sophomore took a pass from Jillian Sprong to score the goal that would be decisive in the 1-0 win, while Sprong’s senior sister Alison kept Midland Park from ever getting close to the scoreboard.
