In Essex County Tournament action Wednesday the 10th seeded Verona girls soccer team advanced to second round play after they defeated the 15th seeded Bengals of Bloomfield High School 4-2. Sophomore Colleen Farrell scored the go-ahead goal in the second half for the Hillbillies to take a 3-2 lead. Julia Ashley, Amanda Flores and Kelsey Attamante had goals for the Maroon and White with assists by Ashley, Olivia Marino, Sidney White and Jillian Sprong. Alison Sprong made six saves in goal. Their record is 5-4.
The volleyball team dropped their second contest this week losing two matches to none against the Nutley Raiders 25-13, 25-19. Verona’s record stands at 7-5.
Junior Jackie Noyes impressive winning streak in first singles was derailed when she was topped in straight sets by Livingston High School’s Nicole Russo. Ashley Stockwell lost in straight sets to Sharon Chen in second singles. Sophomore Ciarra Davison was able to put the Hillbillies on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Natalie Tran and the doubles team of Caroline Chivily/Briana Tedesco battled back after losing the first match to take home a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Livingston loss puts the Verona team’s record at 6-5.
