QUESTION 4: The BOE is the most demanding community position in Verona, and you all have day jobs. What in your current job roles and responsibilities might prevent you from fully carrying out your duties on the BOE?
To carry out the role and responsibilities of the Board of Education, one must be focused and present. With that said, absences may occur, and have occurred in the past, based on one’s job responsibilities. These absences, if few and far between, should not affect a Board member’s ability to fulfill their duties. There will be two circumstances where my job may hinder my ability to fully carry out certain duties of the board of education. The first instance will be during contractually obligated events where I am required to attend as a teacher, such as back to school night and parent-teacher conferences. I will unfortunately have to miss a Board of Education meeting if these events conflict. Secondly, as a member of the state teacher’s union, contractually, I will not be able to partake in teacher negotiations. However, according to the New Jersey School Board Association code of ethics, I will be able to vote on a negotiated contract. Additionally, I will be able to participate in the upcoming superintendent contract negotiations, a critical concern for the citizens of Verona. If elected to the Board of Education, I will be an integral and active team member, and my experience has prepared me to manage the challenges the board will face in the near future.
