Question 1: What is the value of a public school education and are you the product of a public school education?
Timothy Alworth (on Facebook):
Public education is the backbone of our society and our community. Why do people choose Verona, or choose to come back to Verona? For me and my family it was because of the unique sense of small town community and solid school system. The schools are a reflection of the community and therefore their success is important to all residents.

Public schools provide individualized instruction that provides for each child’s needs while ensuring that all students receive the skills necessary to move onto upper education or the workforce. Teachers in public education are passionate and collaborative, working together to challenge and motivate all students so they can maximize their skills and abilities. Public schools provide a safe environment where students from different backgrounds, cultures and perspectives can join together to share in a common educational experience. It should teach children to think critically and have their own ideas while respecting those of differing opinions. The students develop friendships and relationships with their neighbors that will last a lifetime through shared school experiences, challenges and extracurricular activities. These experiences help develop the strong sense of community we feel here in Verona.

I am a product of public education and have dedicated my life to working within the public schools. After graduating from the Glen Ridge school system I attended the College of William and Mary, a public university in Virginia. After a short time working in the music industry I decided to return to the public education I found so rewarding. I returned to school and obtained master’s degrees in music and education from William Paterson University and Montclair State University, two local public universities. Since then I have taught in public education for thirteen years. I believe passionately in the importance of public education to the individual and the community and look forward to serving on the Board of Education.
