The moral of this story is look twice–or three or four times–before changing lanes. That could have prevented an accident that involved a large dump truck, three cars and a pickup truck yesterday afternoon, snarling traffic on Bloomfield Avenue for more than an hour.
According to the Verona Police Department, a dump truck was traveling east on Bloomfield Avenue in front of the Community Center firehouse when a car pulled from the right lane into the truck’s lane. The dump truck driver slammed on his brakes but he was unable to stop in time. The truck hit the car and then began to slide across the avenue and through the intersection of Linn Drive and Oakridge Road towards the old Poekel lot.
While sliding across the road, the dump truck struck an SUV head-on and clipped another vehicle. The SUV, which had been headed west, then spun around to face east and hit a pickup truck hauling a landscaping trailer.
Thankfully, in all this mess there was only one injury. According to the VPD, the SUV driver suffered “serious but not life threatening” injuries to her neck, back and head. No summons have been issued.
