The Verona Police Department is reporting a burglary of an occupied residence in the Wayland section early today that ended with a prompt arrest of two people suspected of also stealing the homeowner’s vehicle.
According to the VPD, at about 5:45 a.m., an unknown person or persons entered the home after pushing open a first-floor window. A key fob was taken from the kitchen area and the suspects fled the scene with the homeowner’s vehicle. The resident heard the suspects as they were exiting the home. Several other vehicles in the neighborhood were burglarized. (The Wayland section is the neighborhood on the east side of Verona Park; Brookdale Elementary School is the school for this neighborhood.(
VPD notified surrounding agencies and contacted the New Jersey State Police’s Auto Theft Task Force (ATTF). The ATTF advised Verona’s police at 9:25 a.m. that it had arrested two adult males in the stolen vehicle in Irvington.
The Verona Police said that an investigation is ongoing, and cautioned that this kind of vehicle theft is happening regularly throughout the West Essex area and the state. The VPD is asking residents, once again to lock all doors and windows and to activate their residential alarm system if they have one.
