Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ11) released the following statement:

“President Trump disgraced the office of the presidency and American democracy last week by inciting an attack on our Capitol in an attempt to undermine our free and fair elections. If he was a man of integrity and a true public servant, he would resign effective immediately. But he is neither of those things, showing no remorse for the violence and sedition he encouraged against the United States government.

“Last night, I voted yes on Representative Raskin’s legislation which called on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. I implored the Vice President to reconsider his position and put our country and our democracy ahead of his loyalty to a President who invited an attack on our democracy.

“Instead, the Vice President chose to shirk his duty to preserve our democracy, and Congress was left with no choice but to impeach the 45th President once again. I applaud the 10 Republicans who joined Democrats in upholding accountability in our democracy.

“My Republican colleagues in the Senate should think long and hard about their constituents, their constitutional duties, and their moral responsibilities, and vote to convict.

“There may be a short time left before the inauguration of Joe Biden, but there is clear reason to believe more chaos is imminent in our nation and Donald Trump will do nothing to stop it – in fact, he encourages it. I will do everything in my power to remove this dangerous man from office and hold to account those in the legislative branch who enable him.”
