The Verona Police Department logged a total of 348 assignments during the week of April 9–April 15, 2017. Responses included the following:
18 burglar alarms (12 residential, 6 commercial)
29 Rescue Squad dispatches
12 Fire Department dispatches
15 motor vehicle crash scenes
2 arrests
78 motor vehicle stops that resulted in 51 traffic summonses being issued and 55 warning notices being issued.
April 9, 2017
12:35 AM: Officer Robert Juliano conducted a motor vehicle stop on Bloomfield Avenue for an observed violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The operator who stated he smoked marijuana in the vehicle on the previous day was asked to step from the vehicle and was searched with negative results. The vehicle was then searched also with negative results. The operator then continued on his way.
11:31 PM: Officer Giovanni Desomma took a report of criminal mischief at a Cumberland Avenue residence. The resident observed three juveniles knock over a portable restroom that was located at a residence. The officers were able to locate the three juveniles a short distance away. Parents for all juveniles were contacted and advised of the incident. There does not appear to be any damage to the portable restroom at this time.
April 10, 2017
7:23 PM: Officer Stephanie Colon took a report of harassment form a Martin Road resident. The resident reported that a neighbor’s child yelled at her child while she was walking home. The resident reported that this is an ongoing issue with the neighbor.
April 11, 2017
12:15 PM: Officers Brian McMahon and Ed Ruff responded to Westfield Police Department to take custody of Joie Tortorello of Garwood on an outstanding warrant from the Verona Municipal Court. She was transported to police headquarters and processed. After processing she was placed in the holding cell.
2:22 PM: Det/Sgt Time Banta took a report of a larceny from a Bloomfield Avenue business. The cashier at the business reported that a male came into the store and made a purchase with a twenty-dollar bill. The individual then asked for the twenty-dollar bill back and paid with a dollar bill and some change. The individual then asked for a twenty-dollar bill. The cashier became confused and gave him a second twenty. The individual is described as a white or Hispanic male wearing a blue tee shirt, jeans and a Yankee hat.
April 12, 2017
7:36 PM: Officer Chris Scheper conducted a motor vehicle stop on Lakeside Avenue for an observed violation. While speaking with the operator, the officer observed several beer cans in the rear passenger area as well as a hollow pen tube that can be used to ingest narcotics. The operator was asked to step from the vehicle and asked about the observed pen. The driver admitted to having a grinder in the vehicle but no drugs. The vehicle was searched with negative results. The operator was issued a summons for the original violation and was allowed to continue on his way.
April 13, 2017
2:48 PM: Officer Ed Ruff took a report of harassment from an employee at a Bloomfield Avenue business. The employee reported that when she went to hand paperwork to a supervisor, he slapped the papers and they fell out of her hand. The supervisor then began to yell and curse at her. When she went to pick up the papers, she stated that the supervisor pushed the back of her head. The supervisor stated that he did hit the papers that were in her hand in a playful manner, and also stated this is typical office behavior and that he never touched the employee. The employee was advised of complaint procedures.
8:42 PM: Officer Alyssa Kirby took a report of a suspicious person from a Bloomfield Avenue business. An employee of the business reported that every day that she works, a black male comes into the store and stays there for several hours. When the male left the store today, the employee retrieved a newspaper that the male was writing on while he was in the store. The employee observed her name written on the paper as well as times. The times coincide with different tasks that the employee completes throughout the day. The business owner was advised of the incident.
April 14, 2017
2:24 PM: Officer Brendan Huber took a report of a burglary to a motor vehicle from a White Rock Road resident. The resident reported that when she came out to her vehicle today, she observed that the driver’s side door handle around the lock was missing. It does not appear that the vehicle was entered and nothing appears to be missing at this time. The value of the damage to the door is approximately $200.
3:30 PM: Officer Stephanie Colon took a report of identity theft from a Wedgewood Drive resident. The resident reported that she received a letter from Target regarding an application for a credit card. The resident reported that she did not apply for the card and has been in contact with Target. The resident reported that her personal information was used for the application. She was provided with identity theft information.
April 15, 2017
11:05 AM: Officer Michael Barone took a report of identity theft form a Hillcrest Terrace resident. The resident reported that when she retrieved her mail, an envelope from her account was opened on both ends. The resident is concerned as the envelope contained personal information for her and her husband. She was advised to contact her account, the IRS and the credit reporting agencies. She was provided with identity theft information.
5:17 PM: Officer Chris Scheper responded to a Personette Avenue residence on a report of a neighbor dispute. The resident reported that when he arrived home this evening, he was approached by the neighbor who advised him that he needs to clean up the leaves in his yard. The resident also stated that the neighbor threatened him if he did not clean them up. Officers spoke to the neighbor who reports an ongoing problem with the resident leaving cardboard boxes
in the driveway that blow onto his property. All parties were advised of complaint procedures.
11:53 PM: Officer Giovanni DeSomma conducted a motor vehicle stop on Bloomfield Avenue for an observed violation. While checking the operator’s credentials, an active warrant from the Orange Municipal Court was located. The operator, Emmanuel Charles of Orange, was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. After processing Charles was turned over to the Orange Police Department.
