If you’re waiting for a commuter from New York, you may be waiting a while. Bloomfield Avenue has been closed westbound from South Mountain to Pompton and Claremont has been closed from North Mountain to the Verona border because of several manhole explosions.
Montclair Police are saying on their Facebook page that the explosions occurred on Claremont Avenue between North Mountain Avenue in Montclair and the Verona border. The explosions also seem to have caused a sinkhole at the crest of Bloomfield Avenue near Sunset Avenue. As of 7 p.m., the Montclair Police were saying that there were no injuries and that PSE&G and the fire departments of both Verona and Montclair were on the scene.
The owner of the Subway franchise on Bloomfield Avenue between Pompton and Sunset avenues said via Twitter about 7:30 p.m. that his location was being closed and that the Verona Police were escorting people from it.
