Wanted: Broken, Used Or Unwanted Crayons

If you have any broken, used or unwanted crayons lying around the house, they might be more valuable than you think: They can help kids in Africa get art supplies.

Here’s how: Bring them to Congregation Beth Ahm in Verona from November 30 through December 7. A group that meets there, the Montclair Jewish Workshop, will donate the crayons to Kageno Kids. It melts unwanted crayons and recycles them into new crayons. They sell these new crayons in the U.S. and send the proceeds to Africa.

Proceeds from past crayon drives have been used to care for children in Banda Village in Rwanda. Kageno Kids is starting a children’s art exchange program in Banda Village and plans to use the crayon drive proceeds to buy local art supplies for this initiative.

Montclair Jewish Workshop is a cooperative effort to provide children with an appreciation and understanding of Jewish culture, values and history through secular education.

Crayons can be placed in the drop-off box in the lobby of Congregation Beth Ahm of West Essex, 56 Grove Avenuea. All forms of crayons are welcome, as are all brands, sizes and types (washable/non washable). Even the ones in the twist up tubes. And, there is no need to sort or peel them.

Drop-off hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, November 30; Monday to Wednesday, December 3 to 5; and Friday, December 7. For questions, e-mail Gretchen Godwin.
