It was cold, it was dark, but for a few hours last night, it was finally Halloween in Verona.
Kids got an hour or two to go door-to-door, or to attend Verona’s first “trunk-or-treat” a tailgating Halloween party in the Verona Pool parking lot that drew more than two dozen cars. (The event was written up in this morning’s New York Times, which noted that many towns around us had cancelled Halloween.)

There seemed to be fewer kids on the streets in some neighborhoods, perhaps because there wasn’t enough gas to get them to their preferred destinations: Newman Avenue, which has become a magnet for trick-or-treaters from all over Verona and beyond in recent years, was fairly quiet last night and some houses even had candy left over.
The adult holding the candy cauldron over his head is Nick Klose, the technology teacher at Brookdale. He made trick-or-treaters answer multiplication problems before he gave up the candy.
And for every child happy to be in costume there was, as always, one who wanted nothing to do with dressing up. Sorry, Peanut, better luck next year.
