The girls’ volleyball team pulled out a major upset over Bloomfield High School yesterday in Verona. Bloomfield plays in the American Division of the Super Essex Conference, which consists of schools much larger than VHS and its conference members. The Hillbillies played one their finest matches of the season and came away with a 25-20, 25-20 sweep. Coach Molli Dowd said juniors Jessica Parsons and Eliza Sniatkowski “served at 100%” and combined for 10 kills. Parsons also led the Hillbillies with an impressive five aces.

“This was a great win for us,” said Dowd, who is in her first year with the Hillbillies, by e-mail. “This was really a game of teamwork. I was very proud of everyone. We were missing two seniors (Amanda Langan and Krysta Tischio ) and the third (Catherine Aracil) had to leave during the second game. So everyone pitched in and hustled together and the difference was really in this stat: Bloomfield gave us 18 free-balls and we only gave them 3. We kept the pressure on.”

The girls soccer team, meanwhile, suffered a tough overtime loss to the Nutley Raiders yesterday in an away match. The Raider’s Victoria Kealy scored the winning goal to give Nutley their sixth win of the season against four losses. Verona’s record stands at 5-3.

Today in Hillbilly Country, the boys’ soccer team plays an Essex County Tournament game at Centennial 4 p.m. against the Orange Tornados. The girls tennis team is away in Glen Ridge and the volleyball team is back in action today for the second round of the Essex County Tournament 4 p.m. against Barringer High School.
