Police Seeking Public’s Assistance On Burglaries

The Verona Police are investigating a burglary to a Linden Avenue residence that is the fourth burglary in the past three weeks.

In the most recent incident, which occurred on Linden between Elmwood and Otsego roads, a resident reported that a male rang his front doorbell. As the homeowner was making his way to the door, he noticed that the male was walking down his driveway. The homeowner confronted the male who asked if the resident was “looking to get rid of any scrap metal”. After answering “No”, the male was last seen walking across the street in the area where a neighbors home was burglarized. At this time, it is unknown if the two incidents are related.

The VPD is reminding residents that a common practice of burglars is to ring doorbells to see if anyone is home. If no one answers, the suspects try another door or window (usually in the rear of the home) to make unlawful entry. The department is asking people to be aware of any unsolicited persons ringing doorbells and asking “strange” questions. Call 911 if you see anything or anyone suspicious, as it is happening, and if you have any information that may assist the police in its investigation of the burglaries, call (973) 239-5000.
