The Verona High School girls basketball team’s run at the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 2 playoffs ended Monday in a 47-40 quarterfinals loss to Rutherford.
Playing at Rutherford against the bracket’s No. 2 seed, Verona played harder that its No. 7 seeding might have indicated was possible. Verona led for the first three quarters, and the scoreboard at the end of the third was Verona 33, Rutherford 27. But the Bulldogs poured on the points in the fourth, putting up 20 points to just seven for Verona.
Taylor McClain, a sophomore, led the scoring for Verona with 13 points, all but one of which was a three-pointer. McClain has had a strong year with 97 total points. Fellow Sophomore Jada Bednar was right behind with eight points, bringing her total for the season to 210.
Cali Giacomazza, a junior, put up seven points against Rutherford, with the rest of the scoring spread across freshmen Eliana Marateo and Leah Haggerty (four apiece), Gabby Egnezzo (three) and Giada Contorno (one).
Verona ended the season with a 19-8 record, and was 12-2 in the Super Essex Conference’s Colonial division.
