The Verona Baseball & Softball League (VBSL) fielded its first 7U team this year and, on Sunday, the boys won the championship against the Wayne PAL Wolfpack, 14-11.
Bobby E started Verona on the path to the win in the top of the first inning, hitting a double that scored two runs. Sebastian C singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, and Mateo B doubled, scoring one run.
In the top of the second, the 7U Barnstormers extended their early lead with five runs, thanks to RBI singles by Cristiano Z, Sebastian, Ethan G, and Ryan C.
Verona added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning on six hits. Bobby E homered to center field, scoring two runs, while Lucas G singled, scoring one run, and Ethan G singled, scoring one run. Ethan would go on to have four hits in four at bats.
Cristiano Z tossed two innings of shutout ball for the 7U Verona Barnstormers in relief. They gave up zero hits, striking out five and walking five.
The 7U Verona Barnstormers had 23 hits in the game, to 21 for Wayne. Elliot L, Miller D, Lucas, Sebastian, Ryan, and Cristiano Z each collected multiple hits for Verona.
VBSL is Verona’s youth baseball and softball players, fielding teams from 7U to 14U. Registration is now open for the 2024 spring/summer travel season tryouts.
