The American Foundation For Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is bringing two of its programs to Verona next week.
On Thursday, April 25, AFSP is hosting “It’s Real: Teens and Mental Health” for the 9th grade students at Verona High School. That same night, AFSP will have a virtual presentation of its “More Than Sad: Parent Education” program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. That program is open to all Verona parents, whether or not their students go to Verona Public Schools.
“It’s Real,” is a short video designed to raise awareness about mental health issues commonly experienced by students. You can learn more about it, and find other resources for teens on AFSP’s website here.
“More Than Sad” teaches parents how to recognize signs of depression and other mental health problems in teens, initiate a conversation about mental health with their child, and get help. You can learn more about this program here, and register to attend by emailing [email protected].
Both programs are presented to the Verona community free of charge thanks to the fundraising done through the AFSP’s walk in Verona Park. The walk was created in 2017 following the death by suicide of Verona teen Vanya Citrano. This year’s walk will be held on Sunday, October 27. AFSP also runs a variety of prevention and loss support programs for adults and funds research into suicide.
