The women’s cancer support group WINGS will hold a presentation on nutrition for cancer patients on Wednesday, October 18, at the Verona Community Center, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Presenter Chrissy Davenport will focus on being mindful and intentional about food intake and finding a balance of macronutrients on a daily basis to ensure that bodies and minds have all the carbohydrates, fats and proteins that cancer patients need to function optimally. The program is free but WINGS is asking that you register for it here.

WINGS is shorthand for Women Inspiring Nurturing Giving Strength & Support. The group was created more than a decade ago to explore how what they call the healing arts—music, art, movement, writing, and the like—could alleviate anxiety among women cancer patients before, during, and after treatment.

WINGS, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, meets monthly at the Verona Community Center. The first part of each meeting is devoted to a specific topic, and the second part is for sharing support. The group says that all participants are invited to speak, but that there is no pressure to do so.

“Women diagnosed with cancer are under a great deal of stress and anxiety,” says Maria Mastrogiannis, a WINGS board member. “Experiencing and learning some new tools to use, as simple as breathing meditation, guided imagery and a gratitude list, or more advanced skills such as reiki, journaling or body movements, can help restore balance and harmony back into their lives.”

The board members have also written a book, “Let Me Walk the Journey with You,” that they offer for free to any woman who comes to the group.

WINGS’ November program will focus on healing movement. There is a break in December and then 2024 will feature writing to heal in January, music and healing in February, and a holistic day of healing in March. For more details on WINGS and upcoming programs, see their website.
