For the fourth year in a row, the Van Vleck House & Gardens in Montclair will serve as a backdrop for an exhibit of handcrafted scarecrows and, new this year, “pumpkins friends,” created by scout troops, nonprofits, local businesses, families, and classees. During the show, visitors to the Gardens will vote in real-time online for the best submission in each category, and the resulting winners will receive $500 each to donate to the nonprofit of their choice. (Verona floral designer Blooms In Hand is a past winner of the scarecrow contest’s business category, with a creation called “October Bride.” F.N. Brown students won the amateur category in 2020.)

How does it work?

You make the exhibits; you choose the winners! From traditional Fall displays made from repurposed or upcycled materials to dark and scary Halloween tributes inspired by history, film, or literature, the only limit is your imagination! All entries are welcome, provided they are family-friendly and homemade. Get creative, have fun, and support your neighbors in need, all while relishing in the beauty of the Fall season in the historic Van Vleck Gardens at the same time!

Contest registration is free but required by October 10th. Register here.
