The athletes of the Verona High School class of 2022 aren’t the only accomplished senior athletes in Verona.
Last month, Anita Blomberg (pink hat) won the silver medal in pickleball’s National Senior Games held in Fort Lauderdale with her doubles partner, Bergen County resident Lois DeGenaro. The pair had earned their ticket to nationals after taking gold in the New Jersey Senior Games for pickleball last fall.
(This wasn’t Blomberg’s first brush with sports fame. The long-time Verona resident, who taught in Montclair for many years, was among the people who carried the official torch for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.)
Blomberg and DeGenaro came very close to gold at nationals: After 14 long, hard-fought matches, they missed by only two points. They had played from 9 a.m. to almost 5:30 p.m. with less than an hour of off-court time the entire day.
Inspiration for anyone who wants to keep going for the gold in their golden years.
So impressed, Anita. Can’t imagine such energy and determination. Congratulations from your neighbors, Barbara and Dennis Mamchur 😉👏👏👏
