festaIn the opening game of the 2013-2014 sports season, the Verona High School girls soccer fell to Gov. Livingston High School, 5-0, at home yesterday.

The Verona team is rebuilding after the loss of five seniors to graduation in June, which included some of their strongest scorers and defensive players. Verona’s offense Monday got a push from junior Jackie Brozyna and senior Carly Festa, but the team couldn’t get past Gov. Livingston goalie Olivia Emanuel. Lindsay DiStaso, Riley Jankowski, Jackie Goldbeck, Missy Quinn and Amanda Bostwick scored for the Berkeley Heights school.

The Verona girls take on Cedar Grove at home today at 4 p.m. The boys soccer team has its opener, also against Cedar Grove, at Memorial Middle School, while the volleyball team is in a quad meet with Cedar Grove, Caldwell and Mount Saint Dominic Academy at Caldwell High School. The cross country teams have their first meet this afternoon as well, in Newark’s Branch Brook Park.brozyna
