John J. Buoye, Jr., devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024 at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge. He was 80 years old.

Visitation will be in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Wednesday, February 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 28 Lakeside Avenue, Verona on Friday, February 23 at 10 a.m.

John was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the eldest of 10 children to John J. Buoye, Sr. and Frances Elizabeth (Kopp) Buoye. He grew up in West Orange and graduated from Our Lady of the Valley High School in 1961. He attended the University of Notre Dame and Rutgers University in Newark prior to serving his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from August 1966 to December 1967. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding meritorious service and was honorably discharged in 1972. Following completion of his military service, John earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

John met the love of his life, Lucila (“Lucy”) Valcos who had immigrated to the United States from The Philippines by way of Canada and they married in 1972. They eventually settled in Verona in 1974 where they raised their three sons.

John worked as a senior expense analyst/accountant for Prudential in Newark for 20 years, retiring in 1992. Post-retirement, he spent much of his time devoted to providing care for his special needs son, Jason, as well as acting as secretary-treasurer for Lucy’s home healthcare business, LB Quality Plus Nurses, Inc. for over 30 years. He was also a passionate fan of Notre Dame football, the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks, and the New York Jets.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Lucila V. Buoye; his son, Jason Buoye; his parents; and his brothers, Dennis, Richard and Robert Buoye.

He is survived by his loving sons, Alexander (Arleen) and Brian (Yvonne) Buoye; cherished grandsons, Xavier and Brandon Buoye; and dear sisters, Suzanne Paul, JoAnn Anderson and Diane Chadwick and brothers, Michael, James and Timothy Buoye.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the Our Lady of the Lake Church Endowment Fund, 22 Lakeside Avenue, Verona, NJ 07044 would be appreciated.
