The Verona High School boys lacrosse team beat Nutley 13-3 on Thursday, on the strength of two players who will be continuing their lacrosse careers in college
Dominic Houck scored six goals for Verona and was credited with four assists. Houck, who had a breakout junior year with 23 goals and 17 assists, has signed with Moravian University. Andrew Healy added eight more saves to his three-digit career total. Healy has committed to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which is a D2 school.
The rest of Verona’s scoring was spread across the team, with Gianluca Checchetto getting three goals and three assists, two goals and two assists for Joseph Houck, one goal and one assist for Ryan Cavallo, and one goal for Sean Donohue. Jesse Wagner had 11 ground balls for Verona, followed by Nicholas Caruso with eight.
The win improves Verona’s record to 3-1 overall, and 2-0 in the NJILL’s Klank division. Verona hosts Dwight-Englewood on Monday, April 15 at 5 p.m. and travels to Cedar Grove on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.
In other VHS sports this week, softball beat Payne Tech 17-2 but lost to Mount St. Dominic 10-0 and Nutley 10-9. Baseball fell to Montclair Kimberley Academy 7-6 and Seton Hall Prep 11-0. Boys golf had a narrow 185-189 loss to West Essex but rallied to beat MKA 185-198. Girls lacrosse had a 16-7 loss to MKA and a 20-9 defeat by Glen Ridge. Boys tennis beat Gold Oct 3.5-1.5 but fell to Caldwell 4-1.
On Saturday, which is opening day for the Verona Baseball-Softball League, VHS baseball hosts College Achieve Paterson at 1 p.m. and girls lacrosse welcomes Watchung Hills at 2 p.m.
