On Thursday, Verona Police Department Detective Robert Maguire was honored by ASIS International’s northern New Jersey chapter for his work on the Floyd Road carjacking in September. ASIS is a professional organization for security professionals.
On the afternoon of September 24, a Floyd Road resident was approached by three males as she pulled her Porsche into her driveway. The three then punched her in the head and face and knocked her to the ground. They fled the scene in the resident’s car and the car they arrived in, but they were spotted by Verona officers who pursued them into West Orange until the suspects’ driving made the chase dangerous for other drivers.
Det. Maguire began running down leads within 20 minutes of the event, and established a person of interest within hours. On October 14, the VPD’s Detective Bureau executed a search warrant on an East Orange address and took a 16-year-old male into custody. The suspect was charged with carjacking, assault, burglary, theft and receiving stolen property, as well as a conspiracy charge.
Verona Police Chief Christopher Kiernan praised Maguire for his effort. “His persistent investigation led to the arrest of this dangerous juvenile,” he said.
