Library To Screen Documentaries, Host Director Discussions

The Verona Public Library is welcoming the directors of three documentary films for a special series in May and June. There will be a viewing of the films, which are intended for an adult audience, followed by a discussion and question and answer session with the filmmakers.

May 19, 2:30 p.m. “Salt in My Soul,” with Director Will Battersby

“Salt in My Soul” is both a documentary and a coming of age story about Mallory Smith, a young woman figuring out how to live while dying. Mallory’s determination to fill her shortened life with hope, laughter, and love will leave you breathless. Based on the bestselling memoir of the same name, additional private writing, and hundreds of hours of audio and video discovered after Mallory’s death.

June 2, 2:30 p.m. “Born Into Brothels”, with Director Ross Kauffman

“Born into Brothels” chronicles the filmmakers’ time in Sonagchi, Calcutta and the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city’s notorious red light district.

June 9, 2:30 p.m. “Maya Angelou: Reflections of a Blessed Soul,” with Filmmakers Hafiz Farid and Shelley Seidenstein

“Maya Angelou: Reflections of a Blessed Soul” is based on an exclusive interview with author, poet and activist Maya Angelou at her home in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Angelou reflects on her unforgettable experiences with such notables as jazz musician, Max Roach, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Reverend Eric Butterworth, and Amiri Baraka.
