On Senior Day, Softball Edges Out Nutley

Chalk it up to senior power: On Senior Day, the Verona High School softball team edged out Nutley 5-4 in a game that almost turned in the final inning.

Monday was a day of family and flowers for (left to right, above) Georganne Valera, Gabby Egnezzo, Lexie Popowich, Olivia Fuentes, Julia Loudon, team manager Rachel Bochicchio and Lauren Paz, who capped their softball careers for Verona. But there was still a game to play, and play they did.

Verona got on the scoreboard first, and kept Nutley at bay through the bottom of the sixth inning, when Verona put up three runs to make the score 5-1. But Nutley gathered its forces at the top of the seventh, and answered back with three runs of their own. Verona capped the gains there, and held on for the win. Loudon was credited with two hits and two runs in the effort, while Popowich had two singles. Sophomore Synclaire Szamborski pitched, striking out two.

Softball is 11-8 on the season, but 10-1 in the Super Essex Conference’s Liberty division. The girls travel to Newark Academy on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.
