Baseball Wins Rivalry Game

Every year, Verona High School baseball plays Cedar Grove in a rivalry game at Yogi Berra Stadium. This year ended in a 7-4 win for Verona, and a lot of good vibes for baseball all around.

Playing under a bright blue sky, the game opened with ceremonial pitches by Michele Kiernan and Karen Lavery, board members for the breast cancer charity Minette’s Angels. Founded in Verona 20 years ago, Minette’s Angels now helps breast cancer patients and their families in several northern New Jersey towns, supports breast cancer research and funds scholarships for nursing students.

The game also brought out the next generation of varsity baseball players and members of Verona Baseball-Softball League teams posed for photos with the high school school teams.

As for the game itself, Cedar Grove got on the board first and the ensuing innings looked like they were pointing to a Panthers victory. But Verona turned on the afterburners in the bottom of the sixth, when they piled on seven runs. In all, Verona had doubles from Joey Farmer, Charlie Pepe and Jac Caporrimo, and additional strong hitting from Julian Santorelli, Frank Orrei, Ryan Radigan and Matt Vaccaro.

Santorelli, Orrei and Matt McMahon split duties on the mound, with Santorelli and McMahon striking out two apiece.

Verona’s record now stands at 13-8 on the season. The team travels to West Essex on Monday, May 13, for a 4 p.m. start.
