Home-Grown Band Added To Summer Music Lineup

There’s been a new addition to the free summer concerts in the center of town, and it is a band with deep Verona roots.

The Defending Champions are playing on Wednesday, August 2, on the lawn in front of Town Hall. The event, which is sponsored by the Verona Chamber of Commerce, starts at 7 p.m.

As MyVeronaNJ.com wrote in one of its first stories a decade ago, The Defending Champions was founded by Matt Ryan (vocals/trombone), Dean Nevolis (guitar), and Matt Schoenebaum (saxophone), who remain with the band today. All three had come up through Verona’s elementary school to high school music program. Fun fact: The band got its name after its musicians were the defending champions at a band competition.
