For decades, Verona has held a winter fair in the loop in front of Town Hall in the center of town. The fair would bring large crowds to the center of town, drawn by craft vendors, local non-profits and houses of worship, and food.
Not this year.
Township officials announced Monday that the 2020 Fair in the Square has been cancelled. As recently as the last Town Council meeting, there had been discussions that perhaps something with a reduced number of vendors might be possible, even with the rising numbers of positive cases of COVID-19 in Verona. Essex County has become a hot spot in the resurgence of the coronavirus and positives in Verona are up almost 18% since the start of the month.
The township still hopes to salvage one part of Fair in the Square: the tree-lighting that ends the day. Yesterday’s announcement promised details next week on how that will happen.
