The Verona High School boys and girls lacrosse teams had almost identical scores in their Saturday games, but very different results. The boys lost to Waldwick High School 11-5, while the girls defeated the Academy of the Holy Angels 11-6.

Playing in Demarest for their season opener, the girls team benefitted from exceptionally strong play by junior Jackie Brozyna, who single-handedly scored as many points for the Hillbillies as the entire Holy Angels team in the rainy contest. Brozyna is one of the returning stars from the VHS team that made it all the way to the first round of the North Jersey, Group 1 state tournament last spring.

Gabi Mottola had two points for Verona, while Cole McConnachie, Dana Pena, and Lizzie Scandiffio, who has committed to play with the Division-I Central Connecticut State University, each had one. Sophomore Amanda Maguire is back in goal for Verona this season, and she had 12 saves in the game.

The girls play Pascack Valley at home on Monday with a 4 p.m. start. The boys team travels to Nutley on Tuesday afternoon.
