On Saturday February 23, the Verona Volunteer Fire Department held a dinner in honor of Chief Pat McEvoy. McEvoy was a two-term chief of the department. In January, he was succeeded by Harvey Goodman.
McEvoy is a long-time Verona resident and a graduate of Verona High School who joined the Verona Auxiliary Fire Department on his 18th birthday in November 1973. As a member of the Auxiliary he served as both treasurer and foreman before becoming a regular member of Company #1 in 1975.
His first position in the fire department was secretary of Company #1. He started his rise through the ranks serving as lieutenant from 1997 to 1998, captain from 1999 to 2000, before becoming assistant chief in 2001 and 2002 and serving as the chief of the VFD in 2003 and 2004.
McEvoy is a life mMember of the New Jersey Exempt Fireman’s Association. He is also a life member and past captain of the Verona Rescue Squad where he was also trained on the heavy rescue apparatus. He has been employed by Verona Aluminum for many years and he and his wife, Barbara, are the proud parents of two sons, John and Brian.
The night was highlighted with a proclamation reading by Mayor Frank J. Sapienza, recognizing McEvoy for his many years of outstanding service to the Verona Volunteer Fire Department and thanking him for his dedication to our Township and our residents.
