Greco-PortraitVerona High School sent three wrestlers to the Region 4 championships this week, and one of them, Frankie Greco, will be moving on to the semifinals at West Orange High School today.

In the quarterfinals last night, Greco once again took the mat against Roberto LoCascio of West Essex, who he defeated at the District 13 championship on February 23. The VHS senior, wrestling at 182, pinned his opponent at the 4:52 mark.

Joe Cordasco and Paul Scully were also both at Regions, having finished with a second and third place, respectively, in their weight class at Districts. They had their opening-round matches for Regions on Wednesday night and Scully scored at 7-2 decision over Ryan Condit of Caldwell, while Cordasco pinned Phil Walsh of St. Mary’s Rutherford in 3:18.

But things did not go their way in the Friday night quarterfinals. Scully, wrestling at 126, was at the short end of a 16-5 major decision to Anthony Giraldo of North Bergen. Christopher Morgan of West Orange once again proved to be Cordasco’s nemesis. Morgan had defeated Cordasco at Districts last weekend to take first place, and scored an 8-2 decision against him at Regions.

The action at West Orange High School begins this morning at 9 a.m. Greco will take on Charles O’Connell of Secaucus first, and the winner of that match will face the winner of the match between Vinnie Mainiero of Nutley and St. Peters Prep’s Jordan Fox. Scully and Cordasco will also be back on the mats, wrestling for third place in their weight classes.

If you can’t make it there, NJ.com will be covering the action live.
