One of the giant escalators at the Exchange Place PATH station abruptly switched into reverse during this morning’s commute. Five people were hurt, but Town Council member Michael Nochimson escaped injury by jumping up onto the barrier between the escalators. You can see him in the upper right hand corner of the video below, which was sent to the New York Post by another commuter.

“It was slipping and pickup up speed,” says Nochimson, who has commuted to Manhattan via Exchange Place for 15 years. “I was the first one to jump on the edge.”
