Verona officials want you to know that they are getting ready for Hurricane Sandy.
The Office of Emergency Management has met with all town departments and the Board of Education, and it has begun to publish storm-related information in a yellow box on the town’s Web site.
Jeff Hayes, who heads the OEM office, says that Web manager Steve Neale will have wireless access to the town’s Web site and will be able to provide updates during the storm. The town’s Web site has been redesigned since last October, when the Halloween snowstorm shut down many communications in town. As a result, the town’s emergency updates, and those from the Police Department’s Nixle alert system, are also accessible by smartphone.
If you think you might need sandbags to block rising waters, the town has set up a supply of bags and sand at the Department of Public Works garage Ozone Avenue just off Grove. The town says the sandbag station will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day until Hurricane Sandy is gone. You can fill yours for free; bring your own shovel.
The town is also saying that people with special medical needs, such as those who need oxygen or are wheel chair or bed bound, or who need electricity to administer medication can be placed on a medical needs list the town keeps. Call the Verona Police Department’s non-emergency number, (973) 239-5000.
The town also wants to remind residents of useful telephone numbers and Web sites:
