Verona resident Jane Eliasof is the executive director at the Montclair Historical Society and she would like to remind you that there’s a big soup tasting at the MHS today to benefit a new garden that will supply fresh food to families in need.
The “Spoon-a-thon” will be feature soups from Comfort Food Kitchen, Fitzgerald’s 1928, Let’spoon, Terra at the Isabel Rose Cafe and Uptown 596. You can also tour the MHS’ Crane houses, see a demonstration of historical soup making, and see the new farm garden and chicken coop (yes, backyard chickens are legal in Montclair).
The grounds behind the Israel Crane and Clark houses on Orange Road have become the second location for Montclair Community Farms. The MHS has cleared and fenced a 6,000-square-foot plot, with the first harvest season slated for 2013. The Montclair Community Farms Project is a youth farming program that teaches local teens how to grow and sell vegetables, and makes fresh produce available at affordable prices. The new farm at the Clark house will also be home to a dozen chickens whose eggs will be sold to local residents or donated to local group residences and soup kitchens.
The Spoon-a-thon will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and the cost is just $5 per adult or $10 per family. The Montclair Historical Society is located at 108 Orange Road, south of Bloomfield Avenue.
