Essex County will be back at the Hilltop Reservation to check on the deer population tonight, Tuesday, March 20, but it probably won’t be as loud as last week. According to a note just sent from the Verona Police Department, county personnel will be using vehicles with spotlights in and around the Hilltop and the former Essex County Hospital Center property. The trucks will be out from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The surveys are pursuant to the deer hunt that was conducted in February. Last week, the county used helicopters and infrared cameras to check on the herd, which led some readers to suspect a manhunt was in progress. The surveys will help determine whether the county will need to conduct a hunt again next winter.
