The most successful season in Verona High School lacrosse history came to an end on Tuesday when the Hillbillies fell to Mountain Lakes 13-1 in second round of the state playoffs.
The Hillbillies played hard on Mountain Lakes’ home turf and were tied 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. But the Verona team went into the half down 4-0 and ended the third quarter down 6-0. As the fourth quarter played out the Hillbillies were just not able to get their offense going. The lone score was by Greg Keating, with an assist by Colin Farawell.
The Verona team ended the season 13-6 with one of the strongest defenses in recent history lead by senior Jack Denton, who will attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the fall. Seniors Farawell and Greg Schiffenhaus lead the scoring on the offensive side of the field. Farawell put up 26 of the team’s 106 goals this season and 22 of its 73 assists. Schiffenhaus, who will attend the University of Miami, had 19 goals and 20 assists. Keating, who will attend the University of Oregon, had 18 goals and nine assists. Goalie Taylor DelColle, also a senior, had a strong run, including a shutout in an early season game against Union City High School.
The Hillbillies will begin planning for the 2012 campaign with Dwight Tucci and Max Kellun returning to anchor the defense and Chris Lapone returning at midfield. The three have been named co-captains of next year’s team.
