OK, we were guilty of a bit of trickery last week. We picked a business that isn’t in business any more, the Brunner auto dealership, and might only have been identifiable to those of you who have lived in Verona for a while, like winner Mike Schumell. Our reasons for doing so will become more apparent when we unveil our plans for a new story series soon. (Can you stand the suspense?)
In the meantime, Fred Goode has a new round of photos for week 35 of the Where In Verona contest. Put your best guess in the Comments field below, with your real name and real e-mail address. As the sun grows stronger, you’ll need one of our highly fashionable MyVeronaNJ baseball caps to shield your eyes.
UPDATE: We’ve added a second third fourth photo.

The boat dropped off at the police station
I’ll go with last week’s wrong answer and see if it’s right this week…Essex Public Works (I believe you told me it is in NJ at 900 Bloomfield)
No to Beth and Maureen, but I think we need to hear more about how a boat wound up at the police station. Details, anyone?
Everett Field
Nope.
West essex building supply
A logical guess, but wrong.
A couple of my son’s friends found the boat floating in the brook behind FN Brown and carried it to the police station. It was a few days after the heavy rain we got.
Verona Aluminum
HB Whitebhorne
No and no.
VHS baseball field
That’s strike 2 for today.
The plaza on Bloomfield Ave where 7-11 is one of the tenants.
And ….. no.
Verona Park Boat House?
No wait…Isn’t that a picture of “Ace Tech Inc” on Bloomfield Ave and Park ave?
Wrong on both counts. I’m loading the third picture now.
very general guess – Hilltop construction site
This contest is about specifics.
Specific? Ok…I’ll guess Fairview Ave, left hand side (as you’re heading towards Cedar Grove) just past the Verona Pool, but before you get into Cedar Grove. If Google would provide an address # I’d give it to you…
Of course I’m probably completely wrong…
Yes, you are.
marvec 271 grove ave
Now there’s a business I didn’t even know about. It’s not the photo, though.
Construction off of White Rock Road
I tried to type just “Nope” but our Comments software won’t let me type the same thing twice. Hence the long answer.
Hillcrest Senior Center
Unfortunately not a senior moment. Wow, Fred might get another winning week…
The old RR tracks (bike path/jogging path) that end at Overbrook.
Overbrook hasn’t existed since we were kids, my dear. And most of the buildings have been torn down. And the path is called the West Essex Trail. All of which is moot because that’s not where the photo is. Take a good look at all the photos again people, or Fred will win…
Can I buy a clue?
Hillcrest Farm?
No, that was week 1. Though Hillcrest is soon going to look a lot different.
No, and I don’t even think you could buy Fred a drink to help with the answer.
The Acura Dealer?
The water tower off Fairway near the West Orange border?
No to both the Shillings.
ok then, last guess; the water tower behind Claridge 2
The playground at Forrest Ave school?
And again, no to both the Shillings. You guys need to have a family conference before you guess again.
This is real “March Madness”! OK Fred, you win. I am done, fried, finished. Have a great weekend all.
Don’t you quit on me Jeff! Think about it. Don’t quit, come on go a little further come on!
Wow. A kinder, gentler Fred. We might be in for an easy contest next week. Or not.
Yeah I give up too :(
Back side of tennis courts at Verona Park?
Wow,it makes it a lot less interesting when people give up. All I can say is you’re close. You had the right subject in a guess you took. Expand your thinking to both sides of town.
Using Fred’s clue – The water tower on fairway ave?
The tennis courts at Verona High School?! *Shrugs*
No to tennis and as for the water tower, we’ve already said no to Jeff Shilling’s guesses about the Fairway and Claridge towers.
Sorry – such a HUGE volume of guesses I missed his fairway water tower guess. Forest Ave Field
I’m creating a keyboard macro for “No”. It should shave hours off my day.
I thought the hilltop water tower was removed years ago. Don’t tell me there is a new one up there? No, this is not a guess because I said I quit and I meant it!
Area around Kips Castle
OK Jeff, if that is not a guess then I am not telling you that there is a water tower on the Hilltop. And since you quit and meant it, then you can’t be the winner.
I’m confused…what’s the answer?
Yes!
We’ll interrupt Fred’s cheering long enough to tell you that there is a third water tower in Verona, located on the Hilltop, and that is where the photo was taken. (We’ll have details on why that is important tomorrow.) But since your dad had said earlier in the day that he was giving up, I was ribbing him a little.
