Mr. John A. Michelsen, 75, died on Friday, September 24, surrounded by family at his home in Verona.

Services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Verona on Tuesday September 28 at 11 a.m. Friends will be received in the Prout Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Michelsen lived in Montclair and San Francisco prior to moving to Verona in 1971.

He is a 1953 graduate of Montclair High School and a 1957 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a BS in Electrical Engineering and has completed post-graduate courses in business management, industrial power systems, critical path Management, engineering estimating and power system relaying.

He served as an ordnance supply officer, First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1967, being recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis.

Mr. Michelsen was active as the secretary of the corporation and former vice president and general plant manager of the Graphite Metallizing Corp. in Yonkers, N.Y.

He is a former president and long-time member of the board of directors of the Yonkers General Hospital/St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers.

Mr. Michelsen is a member and former president of the Montclair Society of Engineers, a member and former program chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a member and former chair of the Power Engineering Society, an elder and past president of the board of trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of Verona, a former trustee and past president of the Verona Student Loan Association, former treasurer and past president of the New York Chapter of the Virginia Military Institute Alumni Association, a former member of the Juvenile Conference Committee of the Family Court of Essex County and former Assistant Scoutmaster and Committee member of BSA Troop 2, Verona.

Devoted to his wife and family, and a dedicated community leader, Mr. Michelsen is survived by his wife of 48 years, Deborah Walker Michelsen, his children Warren W. Michelsen and wife Jennifer, Paula M. McGovern and husband Jim and Caroline M. Mescia and husband Peter. He is also the brother of Jerome A. Michelsen, Judith M. Ammeen , Karen Sibley and the grandfather of Emily, Julie & Michelle Michelsen, Elise & James McGovern, and Jacqueline, Perry & Trevor Mescia.
