Game On!

MyVeronaNJ-Girls-BasketballDue to Thursday and Friday’s big snow, some big games for Verona teams were postponed. The worst of the weather is behind us now and we have the revised Saturday schedule.

Friday evening’s girls basketball game against Montclair Kimberly Academy to decide the league championship is now scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at VHS. Senior night will become Senior Day, so Michelle Petronaci, Gianna Pignatello and Erin Percevault will get a special tribute, and, we hope, a great win to top their high school careers.

The Wrestling Region Tournament, which will feature Hillbilly Wrestling senior Sean Shabazian and junior Colin Farawell, is Saturday at West Orange High School. Instead of a two-day tournament spanning Friday evening and Saturday, all wrestlers will now wrestle in the quarterfinals that begin at 9 a.m. The semifinals will begin at noon, followed by so-called wrestlebacks at 4 p.m., third-place consolations at 6 and finals at 7 p.m. Close to 40 teams, both private and public, compete in this tournament,  so it will be a long and intense day. The top three winners in each weight category will earn a chance to wrestle at the state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City next weekend.

The Meet of Champions, the winter track championship, will be held as scheduled in Tom’s River on Saturday, with a slight schedule change. The pole vault, where senior Rebecca Slotkin will compete, begins at noon instead of 11 a.m. The rest of the girls’ events will begin at 3 p.m. when two VHS juniors will compete. Rebecca Lee will throw the shot put and Kelly Scully will run the 3200 meter race.

The Cheer Competition in Garfield has been canceled and the new date has not yet been announced.

Of course this is all assuming the weather cooperates. The National Weather Service is calling for up to three more inches of moderate snow or slush accumulation through 6 a.m. Saturday. With temperatures expected to dip below freezing, travel could be hazardous in the early morning hours. On the plus side: The service has downgraded the earlier winter storm warning to a winter weather advisory.
