On May 4, 2024, in the blink of an eye and just two weeks shy of her birthday, Lisa Fitzgerald became the “Miracle of Morristown.”
Instead of what should have been an uneventful commute to New York, the 2012 graduate of Verona High School found herself hit by an NJ Transit train. She saved her own life by pulling herself off the train tracks, onto the platform, and screamed for help. Fitzgerald was rushed to the hospital for an emergency life-saving surgery that amputated part of her left leg. Days later, the doctors determined her knee could not be saved and her leg needed further amputation.
There is now a GoFundMe to help the young woman with her rehabilitation and care, which has a $100,000 goal.
“Extreme challenges exist for Lisa to return to the active and fun loving daughter, sister, and friend we all know and love,” the organizers wrote. “However, watching Lisa fearlessly smile through adversity inspires us all. Your kindness and generosity will provide her with the resources she needs to return to a normal life.”
