Spring sports kicked off this week despite the rain. The Verona High School baseball team got in a 5-2 win over West Orange on Monday and softball trounced Millburn 11-1 before the deluge. There was a loss on Tuesday when girls lacrosse fell to Randolph 17-5, and Wednesday was a washout.
And then on Thursday, baseball delivered a nail-biting 9-7 win over Bloomfield.
Early on, it didn’t look like it was going to be a Verona win. At the top of the third inning, Verona was down six to nothing. Verona put one on the scoreboard at the bottom of the third, but didn’t build on that again until the bottom of the fifth, when they added four runs to just one for Bloomfield. Verona scored two more in the bottom of the sixth, making the game a 7-7 tie. Andrew DePaul was credited with two runs, while Charlie Pepe had two RBIs.
Then it was time for Ryan Radigan to have the final say. With a runner on base, Radigan sent one flying for a homer that sealed the win for Verona. In. February, Radigan committed to playing college baseball for Arcadia University, a D3 school.
Boys tennis got in a 5-0 win over Bloomfield earlier today. Baseball is back on Doc Goeltz field this afternoon at 4 p.m. to take on Glen Ridge, while boys lacrosse will be on the upper field against West Orange. Softball is traveling to Glen Ridge.
