Jake Ferry’s bid for a state wrestling title has ended.

The VHS senior (seen here in a photo from last year) competed Thursday in the opening round of the NJSIAA tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Ferry, wrestling at 150 and ranked 27th, took to the mat against sixth-ranked Jamar Dixon of Delsea Regional High School. But the south Jersey wrestler quickly pinned Ferry.

Ferry had blazed his way through the District and Regions championships in February. He finished second at 150 pounds at the District 10 championship and scored his 100th career win there. He went on to finish second again at the Region 3 tournament last weekend, pinning every opponent before his final Regions match, a loss to Bergen Catholic’s Jayden Iznaga.

Iznaga, who is ranked ninth, takes on Christian Brothers Academy’s Tyler Venet, ranked 16th, in the state quarterfinals today. Dixon faces third-ranked Zach Ballante of St. Joseph Regional High School.
