An eight-year-old F.N. Brown student facing a rare eye disease was the guest of honor at the Rutgers University wrestling team’s match against Ohio State earlier this month.
Miles Jaffe was honored as the Shining Knight of The Game, which is an initiative by Rutgers Athletics and its official healthcare provider, RWJBarnabas Health, to lift the spirits of a patient battling healthcare challenges.
Last October, when Jaffe was feeling lethargic, his parents took him to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where doctors diagnosed him with Lyme disease. Following initial complications, including pressure on his eyes and brain, it was determined that Jaffe had developed a pseudotumor–paralysis of the bilateral eye muscles. Dr. Uzma Hasan, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group, and the medical team at RWJBarnabas Health developed a treatment plan.
Jaffe is now on the road to recovery. He is very excited to be active again and looks forward to participating in Little League baseball this spring.
Before the February 4 wrestling match, Jaffe had the opportunity to meet Scott Goodale, Rutgers wrestling head coach, in the team’s practice gym at the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center. He was then joined on the mat by his dad, Benjamin, and the Rutgers Scarlet Knight Mascot, where he was saluted for his bravery and strength to fight.
