Long-time Verona resident and environmentalist Anne Stires wants readers to know about a sustainability conference coming to Montclair in April.
The Northeast Earth Coalition (NEEC) will hold its eighth “Acting Locally for a More Sustainable World” conference on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University Hall Conference Center at Montclair State University. This event is co-hosted by Montclair State’s PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies and will include talks by three experts in regional environmental issues as well as presentations by local change makers doing grass-roots work to affect positive change.
Marcus Sibley, director of conservation partnerships at the National Wildlife Federation, will speak on environmental justice advocacy. Dr. Jason Grabosky of Rutgers University’s Departmen. of Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources, will explore the importance of trees in New Jersey’s developed landscapes. Donna Merrill, founder of Pollinator Pathway, will discuss creating region-wide corridors for pollinators to assist their survival in a time of ecological crisis.

The NEEC works at the community level to protect the environment and promote local sustainability and food security by supporting community and environmental activists who give hope for a better future. In 2016, NEEC awarded Stires its Outstanding Life Achievement Award.
