Mr. George D. Hansen, Jr. died on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at The Oaks Healthcare Center of Cranes Mill in West Caldwell. He was 79 years old.

Visiting will be in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Thursday, January 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Verona, 10 Fairview Avenue, Verona on Friday, January 5 at 10 AM. Interment to follow in Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover.

Born in Jersey City, George was a lifelong resident of Verona. He graduated with the Class of 1963 from Verona High School, was an instructor and member of the Verona Junior Rifle Club, a life member of the Verona Rescue Squad and served as a trustee at the First Presbyterian Church of Verona.

George served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967, stationed both stateside as well as in Vietnam as a headquarters clerk.

He had a 35-year career as an equipment installer (NJ Bell Telephone-AT&T-Avaya) in Harrison, retiring in 2001. He then joined Krug Electric in Caldwell as a part-time electrician’s helper.

George was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia A. Hansen; his children, Jessica Hansen and Adam Hansen, his parents, Winifred (nee Coad) and George David Hansen, Sr., sister Jane W. Hansen and sister-in-law Marilyn Hansen.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (nee Smith) Hansen; his siblings, William C. Hansen, Robert A. Hansen (Kathleen), and Janice H. Tierney (Michael). George also cherished his nieces Kimberly Casale, Jennifer Hansen, Amy Ledesma, Melissa Morgan, Laura VanTassell, Kelley Tierney, Amanda and Jayme Yeskel and nephews Wayne Masters, Matthew Hansen and Michael Tierney.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to either Backpacks for Life 201 Montgomery Street, #263, Jersey City, NJ 07302 or the Verona Rescue Squad, 12 Church Street, Verona NJ 07044 would be appreciated.
