Mr. James Joseph Tonko, Sr. died on November 29, 2023 at the Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark. He was 66 years old.
Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Tuesday, December 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Born and raised in Jersey City, Mr. Tonko lived in Kearny for 12 years prior to moving to Verona 30 years ago.
He had a lifelong career as an electrician working with the IBEW Local 164 in Jersey City.
Mr. Tonko was a volunteer with “Rebuilding Together” in Jersey City.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Jean (nee Mulligan) Tonko and his brother, John Tonko.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer (nee Gaffney) Tonko; his children James J. Tonko, Jr., Jessica Jean Tonko-Grant (and her husband Adam); his siblings Valerie Sheridan and Nancy Meurer.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Rebuilding Together would be greatly appreciated.
